Before knowing eligibility, age limits and exam criteria, I would like to describe the type of teaching jobs in the India Government. 


Types of teaching jobs in the Government sector


It is well known that Education is essential in all stages or ages. To provide the best education for all groups of children's or students, the government was divided into mainly four classes:-

  • Primary Education
  • Secondary Education
  • Senior Secondary Education and
  • Degree in Education.

But currently, the Government of India published its New Education Policy for the best education in 2020. According to the new policy, it is categorized in 5+3+3+4 for the age group of 3 to 18 years.



So you have more chances to become a Teacher from the Montessori school Teacher to higher secondary school teacher now. Means there are four types of Teachers job in government sector in India:

  • Primary school Teacher
  • Middle and Secondary school
  • Senior secondary school Teacher
  • College/University Teacher.

You know that there are many teachers doing jobs in one school due to different subjects and courses. So you understand that the eligibility can be different for each of the teachers. But some common eligibility is mandatory for everyone to get teaching jobs in the government sector, which is the certificate of Teacher Training and passed the CTET & TET examinations.


Now you understand that there are several routes leading towards a job in teaching depending on your qualifications and choice, which type of teacher you want to become. Eligibility for each type of teacher are given below:-


Eligibilities for Primary Teacher (PRT)

  • Intermediate in Arts or Science 
  • Diploma course in Elementary Education (D. El. Ed) 2years
  • CTET or TET 

PRT teachers teach the age group of 5-11 years children, which read in class I to V.


Eligibilities for secondary Teacher (TGT)

  • Graduate in Arts or Science
  • Diploma in Bachelor of Education (B. Ed)
  • CTET  or TET (In States)

Trained graduate teachers (TGT) teach 6th to 10th classes for the age group of 11 to 14/15. It is categorized in Middle school ( class VI-VIII) and High school (class IX-X), but eligibility is the same for both types of teachers.


Eligibilities for senior secondary Teacher ( PGT)

  • Post Graduate in any stream
  • Diploma in Bachelor of Education (B. Ed)
  • CTET or STET ( not compulsory in some states)

Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) also known as the Lecturer in some states are mostly t the 11th, 12th class's students. It is necessary for you to have a Master's degree in the related subject in which you want to teach.


Eligibilities for Degree College Teacher

  • Post Graduate in related subjects
  • PhD
  • NET/JRF

Teachers of degree Colleges are known as Assistant professor or Professors. They teach Graduation and Post Graduation courses in college and university. PhD is not compulsory for this job, You are eligible for this post if you passed the National Eligibility Test (NET) or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). But you already have a PhD degree with NET/JRF you can get more bonus marks.


Age limits for the government teacher jobs


The age limits for the government teachers job are varied according to the posts of teachers. Age can vary from primary teacher posts to TGT or PGT teacher posts. It can also depend on state and central rules, as well as the organizations. But generally, the maximum age limits in the government teachers jobs are 40 years.


Maximum Age limits in central teachers job

  • Primary Teacher (PRT)- 30 Years
  • Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT)- 35 years
  • Post Graduate Teacher (PGT)- 40 years

Note: Age Relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PH/Female, Ex-servicemen and others is 3 to 10 years are applicable for all teacher posts in govt sector.
