Eligibility and Roles of the Vice President of India

Eligibility for the Vice President of India is: 


  1. He/She should be a citizen of India.

  2. The age should be a minimum of 35 years.

  3. Not to be another profitable post under the government of India or States.

  4. He/She fulfils the norms of being elected a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Roles of the Vice President in Indian Administration


According to article 63 of Indian Constitution, there have been arrangements for a post of the Vice President in India and he has also allotted two most important roles.


Firstly the Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (article 64) and he will preside over the Rajya Sabha.


Second most important work of the vice president is, he will play a role as the President when the President is resigned, death and absence due to other causes.


There are two Vice Presidents of India Sri V V Giri and Sri B D Jatti played roles as the President of India when the death of the two India's President Dr Jakir Hussain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed during his terms. The Vice President of India is elected indirectly by the system of proportional representation by a single transferable vote by the electoral college, same as the President of India but one thing is different and that electoral college. In the electoral college members of the state legislatures and Union Territories do not participate. Means only the elected members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha will participate.


The vice president of India is elected for five years. It means the term of the vice President is 5 years. But he may resign from self-decision before his tenure. He can also be removed by the decision of the Parliament before his term, but the decision should be passed by the majority of the members of the Rajya Sabha.


The Vice-President of India Salary, Pension and other allowance 


The Vice-President of India doesn't get any salary as the Vice-President, he gets his salary and other allowance as a chairman of the Rajya Sabha. At present, he is getting 4 Lakhs/Month as a salary. Apart from his salary he also gets allowance and facilities like travel allowance, house, etc.


One most important thing is that when the Vice-President works as a chairman of Rajya Sabha he gets his salary as the chairman but when he works as the President he gets salary, facilities and benefits as the President of India. But the Vice-President can't do both jobs simultaneously. It means he can do only one job in one time.
